“Death Cell 601 “to become museum

“Death Cell 601″ is a prison cell of the extensive prison complex in Scheveningen of which some parts also houses the UN’s detention unit for prisoners. A part of the prison is to be demolished because the cells are deemed unsafe. But the foundation Oranjehotel ( the name of the prison during the second world war )wants the section that houses cell 601 into a museum. They also want to build an information centre giving the history of the building and its occupants. Hundreds of prisoners stayed in the Oranjehotel, before they were executed in the nearby sand dunes or sent to Nazi concentration camps. More information on www.oranjehotel.com

ARTIST of the MONTH: Rozemarijn Lucassen

American School of The Hague students collaborated with ThexpatTV to profile some of the wonderful artists living and working in The Hague. As students of video production, these Grade 9-12 aged 14-18 students undertook a series of interviews with key artists, learning about their art, their passions, achievements, and learning experiences.  Artist Profiles will be aired on ThexpatTV over the coming months. Featured artists include; Andrea Freckmann, André Kruysen, Navid Nuur, Thomas van Linge, Willem Marijs, Puck Verkade, Babette Wagenvoort and Joncquil.

Centenary Peace Palace

Toad migration

The toads will soon wake from their winter hibernation and move towards the ponds to breed and lay their eggs. Volunteers are on standby to help the toads, frogs and salamanders avoid being hit by traffic.

Curator looking for new owner pier

Last month the Pier in Scheveningen was declared bankrupt by the court. The appointed trustee who is handling the bankruptcy has indicated that he wants to retain Scheveningen Pier. He sees a role for the municipality of The Hague, especially when it comes to flexible regulatory. Scheveningen pier is to be sold at a public auction in March, the trustee said in a press release.

Tram lines follow other routes

Some of the trams lines will change their routes and follow temporary routes as of January 2013. Due to roadworks in the city centre of The Hague it is neccessary to change the routes.
